Putting the North Peace on the Citizen Science map by empowering residents to collect, research and share local data

To advance our strategic priorities, we set out to inspire and equip residents of the North Peace region to become active citizen scientists through hands-on exhibits, outdoor workshops, and partnerships that fostered environmental awareness, data collection, and community-driven learning.

  • Museum Talks - Presentations from five Directors on everything from the streams to the skies in our watershed
  • Special Events - Nature walks showcasing iNaturalist and other citizen science tools; nature journaling and painting en plein air 
  • Signature Events - Our usual crowd-pleasers with emphasis on the importance of citizen science: Curious Critters, Bat Walk, Bird and Plant ID Walks, Monitoring Events

An interactive exhibit "Science All Around Us: The Importance of Citizen Science" captivated visitors to the Fort St. John North Peace Museum this summer.
Developed by the Charlie Lake Conservation Society, this  showcased citizen science  highlighting a rich variety of plants, animals, ecosystems and features of night sky all in the Charlie Lake area. Through colourful displays and interactive elements, the exhibit and related presentations and guided nature walks sparked curiosity and enthusiasm, inviting everyone to become a part of the citizen science movement.

There were discussions on issues such as climate change and the importance of long-term wildlife tracking, emphasizing that everyone has a role to play in preserving the environment.

Participants were introduced to nature journaling, localized data collection through iNaturalist and other popular apps to document biodiversity and bridging the gap
between the public and professional scientists.

Children loved the "Kit Zone," a highly interactive space designed specifically for younger scientists. This area featured a quiet reading area, puzzles, picture blocks, a magnetic marble run designing model and various wildlife figures, ensuring that children can engage with science in a fun and educational way.

"Science All Around Us" showcased the vital contributions of everyday citizen scientists through real-world tools and techniques. This exhibit was made possible through the generous support of key regional community partners and sponsors, including the North Peace Community Foundation (NPCF).
